Apple is taking another step toward replacing the physical wallet. The company announced a new Digital ID feature, which allows iPhone and Apple Watch users to securely store and present their U.S. passport information directly from the Apple Wallet app.

The update, which is launching in public beta, is available for domestic travel at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints in more than 250 U.S. airports. This means you can now verify your identity at the airport using just your iPhone or Apple Watch — no need to dig through your bag for your passport.

However, Apple is quick to note that Digital ID is not a replacement for a physical U.S. passport and cannot be used for international travel or border crossings.

“With the launch of Digital ID, we’re excited to expand the ways users can store and present their identity — all with the security and privacy built into iPhone and Apple Watch,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s Vice President of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet.

“Since introducing the ability to add a driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet in 2022, we’ve seen how much users love having their ID right on their devices. Digital IDs brings this secure and convenient option to even more users across the country, as they can now add an ID to Wallet using information from their U.S. passport.”

How Digital ID Works

To set it up, users need an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26.1, or an Apple Watch Series 6 with watchOS 26.1. After opening the Wallet app, tap the “+” button at the top of the screen in Wallet, select Driver’s License or ID Cards, and then choose Digital ID.

They’ll then be guided through a verification process that includes scanning the photo page of their physical passport, reading its embedded chip to verify authenticity, taking a selfie, and performing a few facial movements for additional security checks. Once verified, the Digital ID is added to Apple Wallet and ready for use.

Using Digital ID In Apple Wallet

To present a Digital ID in person, users simply double-click the side or Home button, select Digital ID, and hold their iPhone or Apple Watch near an identity reader. They can then review what information is being requested and can approve the request using Face ID or Touch ID.

Security And Privacy

Apple emphasized that Digital ID data is stored locally and encrypted, meaning the Cupertino giant cannot see when, where, or how an ID is used. Users don’t need to unlock, show, or hand over their phone — the entire process is contactless and protected by biometric authentication.

Future Expansion

The new feature builds on Apple’s existing driver’s license and state ID support, already available in 12 U.S. states and Puerto Rico, as well as Japan’s My Number Card. With the addition of Digital ID, Apple continues to move closer to its long-term vision of making Wallet a true all-in-one identity hub.
